Genetic Diversity in Curly Coated Retrievers

Curly Coated Retriever is a breed belonging to the retriever breed group. The population of Curly Coated Retrievers is relatively small: globally, the estimated population size for the breed is only about 6 000 individuals. In Finland, about 40 Curly Coat Retrievers are born every year. To have an overview on the situation of this breed, both in Finland and globally, the Finnish Curly Coated Retriever Breed Club Kiharakerho ry has made the decision to start a project aiming at identifying the genetic health and diversity of this breed and its breeding base.

Kiharakarvainen noutaja – Rodun monimuotoisuutta kartoittamassa

Kiharakarvainen noutaja on noutajaryhmään kuuluva rotu, joka on populaatioltaan suhteellisen pieni. Maailmanlaajuisesti kiharakarvaisia noutajia arvioidaan olevan vain noin 6 000 yksilöä. Suomessa kiharakarvaisia noutajia syntyy vuositasolla noin 40. Rodun jalostuspohjan kartoittamiseksi ja rodun monimuotoisuuden vaalimiseksi suomalainen kiharakarvaisten noutajien rotua harrastava Kiharakerho ry on päättänyt aloittaa kevään 2014 aikana projektin selvittääkseen rodun tilannetta sekä Suomessa että globaalisti.

Updated overview to genetic diversity levels in different dog breeds

In the statistics below, we give you an updated overview to genome-wide measured genetic diversity levels in different breeds. This table helps you get an understanding of what kind of differences there may be between breeds in terms of heterozygosity. The information gets updated with each new tested dog in the MyDogDNA database and thus refers always to the latest data available.

Exploring Genetic Diversity in Akita Inu

Originally, Akita Inu is an ancient Japanese hunting breed that has a variety of different phases in its history. Nowadays, there are tens of thousands of Akita Inus, most of them living in the breed's country of origin, Japan. The breed has developed from a small number of dogs. As a result, the breed has a narrow gene pool and therefore, the owners and breeders of Akita Inus share now a common goal to preserve the breed's genetic diversity.
